Women's Basketball Holds Off New Haven, 74-64

The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Chargers of the University of New Haven this evening in an NE-10 match-up. The Panthers shot 51.9-percent from the field and held the Chargers to under 40-percent shooting for the 74-64 win. AU improves to 3-4 and 2-4 in the league, while UNH falls to 2-5 and 1-5.

For the Panthers, senior Ashley Caiafa scored a game-best 24 points to go along with six rebounds, while sophomore Kara Tancredi netted 20 points and pulled down seven misses. Junior Amanda Campusano added 11 points and eight rebounds, and freshman Sade Jackson dished out a game-high 13 assists.

The Chargers led through the opening minutes of the first half until 12:43 when Tancredi converted a lay-up from Jackson. The Panthers would then push their lead to eight, 18-10, with 9:40 left after Tancredi set up Caiafa who buried a jumper. Over the next three minutes Adelphi went on a 7-4 run which was highlighted by a three-pointer from junior Erika Cottle. With the Panthers up 27-14 with 4:38 left in the half, the Chargers came back and cut the lead to 27-21 after a bucket from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty. AU would close out the half strong and head into the locker rooms up 35-27.

UNH opened the second half with two quick buckets from Jill Baranger to cut the Panthers' lead in half. With 15:39 left on the clock, the Chargers made the score 41-39, courtesy of a triple from Anh-Dao Tran. AU would then extend the lead to 50-41 on a three from Caiafa, which was her third in a row at the time. The Panthers would maintain a double-digit lead for most of the second half until the Chargers got to within nine with 6:06 remaining, 62-53. Freshman Jessica Kitrys put AU up 11 with 3:13 left. New Haven would get the score to 68-64 after a Baranger lay-up, but it wasn't enough as Adelphi converted free throws to secure the win.

Adelphi won the battle on the boards 38-34 and was perfect from the free throw line, going 11-11. The Panthers also dished out 20 assists on their 27 field goals made.

For the Chargers, Baranger led the way with 20 points and four rebounds, while Tran dropped 19 points and four boards. Ithier-Vicenty contributed 11 points and four assists.

The Panthers return to action on Thursday, December 9 when they travel to take on Queens College at 5:00 p.m.
