The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 contest on Tuesday, December 7. The Panthers held the Chargers to just 18 first half points, building an eight point halftime lead on the way to a 62-47 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 5-3 overall, while evening their conference mark at 3-3, New Haven falls to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in NE-10 action.
Rob Johnson led three Panthers in double figures, scoring 17 points and pulling down seven misses, while Richard Byrd chipped in 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists. Chris Ranglin also reached double figures with 11 points, while Richard Harkins chipped in nine.
Neither team could find the basket early, combining for just seven points, a 4-3 Panther lead, in the first five minutes of action. However, New Haven would rattle off four quick points to take a 7-6 edge on a Robert Jamerson lay-up with 12:08 on the clock.
Adelphi would answer by throwing down the first double digit run of the night, using a 11-0 spurt to take a 10 point, 17-7 lead,on a Richard Harkins triple at the 7:34 mark. However, New Haven answered right back, using a 11-2 outburst to cut the Panthers bulge to just one on another Jamerson basket with 2:22 on the clock.
Unfortunately for the Chargers, the Panthers scored seven unanswered points over the next 1:29 to push their margin back to eight points, 26-18 with 53 seconds left in the first frame, which is how the first half would end.
Adelphi kept the run going as the second half opened, kicking things off with 12 straight points, eight scored by Rob Johnson, to expand their lead to 20 points, 38-18 with 13:50 on the clock. The Panthers lead would get as large as 21 points, and New Haven would cut the margin to 12 twice, but could get no closer, as Adelphi claimed a 62-47 victory.
The Panthers return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 18 when they host the Adelphi Holiday Classic. The first game will tip-off at 5:30 pm and will feature St. Rose and Dowling and the Panthers will take on Molloy at 7:30 pm.
