Men's Basketball Stopped in Springfield, 61-50

Springfield, MA - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on Northeast-10 member American International College (AIC) on Saturday, December 4. The Panthers built a five point lead at the half, 27-22, but went cold in the second half, falling 61-50. With the loss Adelphi falls to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10, while AIC improves to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

Junior guard Rob Johnson scored 12 points with three rebounds to lead Adelphi, while senior guard Richard Byrd added nine points with seven boards. Sophomore guard John Calarco also scored nine points off the bench for the Panthers.

AIC struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 22.7 percent (5-22) from the floor, as it went into the locker room trailing 27-22 at the half, thanks to 44 percent shooting from Adelphi.

The second half was a different story as the Yellow Jackets came out firing with a 16-5 run to take a 38-32 lead 6:09 into the second half. AIC never trailed from the point on in the game as it shot a much improved 60- percent (12-20) from the field in the second frame.

AIC would push their lead to 11 at the 12 minute mark of the second half, but the Panthers would claw to within six, 45-39, on two Rob Johnson made free throws with 8:25 on the clock. Unfortunately the Yellowjackets would push the lead back to double digits on the way to a 61-50 win.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, December 7 when they play host to the University of New Haven at 7:30 pm in Garden City.
