The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to Springfield, Mass. to take on the Yellow Jackets of American International College this afternoon. The Panthers got within two in the finals seconds but AIC hit two free throws to seal the win, 59-55. The Yellow Jackets improve to 6-2 and 4-1 in the NE-10, while AU falls to 2-4 and 1-4.
For the Panthers, senior Ashley Caiafa scored a game-high 17 points, while sophomore Kara Tancredi added 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior Amanda Campusano chipped in with nine points.
AIC would have the lead throughout most of the first half and jumped out to an early seven-point lead, 13-6, with 15:12 left after a lay-up from Rhea Pascal. After a bucket from Tancredi to cut the lead down to five, AIC came back to re-gain their seven-point lead, 17-10. With 3:10 left in the first half, freshman Sade Jackson converted a lay-up to even the score at 22-22. The Yellow Jackets would then go on a 7-0 run to go up 29-22, but Adelphi would get a basket right before the half to head into the locker rooms down five.
Just over three and a half minutes into the second half, Michelle Lafond buried a three-pointer to put the Yellow Jackets up 39-33. With 12:10 left in regulation, AU cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 43-40 after a basket from Tancredi. The Panthers would then take their first lead since the opening minutes, 46-45, after a fast break lay-up from Caiafa. After two free throws from Pascal with 18 seconds left to put AIC up six, Adelphi got back-to-back baskets from Tancredi and Caiafa to get within two, but it wasn't enough as AIC sealed the win with two free throws in the final seconds.
AIC shot 52.4-percent from the field and won the battle on the boards 37-27. The Panthers shot 36.2-percent from the field and collected 12 steals and turned AIC over 24 times.
For the Yellow Jackets, Lafond led the way with 16 points and three assists, while Adriana Johnson added 12 points and four helpers.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, December 7 when they host the University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m.
