The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Chargers of Dominican College this afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Panthers held the Chargers to just 18 second half points en route to the 62-48 victory. Adelphi improves to 5-5 overall, while Dominican drops to 4-6.
For the Panthers, senior Ashley Caiafa led the way with a game-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds, while freshman Jessica Kitrys netted a career-best 16 points and pulled down nine misses. Junior Amanda Campusano chipped in with seven points.
Through the first seven and a half minutes of action both team traded baskets with Adelphi up 15-14 with 12:20 left in the first half. The Panthers would extend their lead to six, 22-16, with 7:17 remaining after a jumper from Campusano. The Chargers would then take a one-point lead, 25-24, after a bucket from Shanice Scully. Shannon Lavelle would bury a three-pointer with 2:17 left in the half to put the Chargers up two. With the score even at 30-30 with four second lefts, junior Erika Cottle converted a lay-up to put AU up two at the half, 32-30.
The Panthers opened the second half on a 10-0 run with five points from Kitrys. Dominican cut the Panthers' lead to four, 44-40, with 12:33 left in the contest after a jumper from Scully. Over the next three minutes, Adelphi would extend their lead back up to double digits, 51-40. The Panthers would maintain a double digit cushion for the majority of the second half to secure the victory.
The Panthers shot 43.9-percent from the field and out-rebounded the Chargers 40-29. Adelphi also turned the Chargers over 19 times in the game.
For the Chargers, Lavelle led the way for Dominican with 13 points, while Scully added 12 points. Lindsey Lopez was also in double figures with 11 points off the bench.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, January 2 when they travel to Syracuse, New York to take on Le Moyne College at 1:00 p.m.
