The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to take on non-conference rival Dowling College this afternoon. The Panthers shot 24.2-percent from the field, while Dowling shot 47.3-percent en route to the 70-42 win. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 4-5 overall.
For the Panthers, freshman Jessica Kitrys led the way with nine points and eight rebounds, while classmate Sade Jackson chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
Dowling jumped out to an early 10-4 lead at the 14-minute mark after a three-pointer from Kelly Puwalski. A little more than two minutes later, the Panthers cut the lead to 12-9 after two free throws from Kitrys. Over the next 2:06 Dowling went on a 10-0 run on the Panthers with five of the 10 points from Puwalski. Dowling would maintain a double-digit lead for most of the first half until sophomore Alexis Williams hit two free throws with 44 seconds left to get AU within eight, 32-24.
Dowling would come out of the half strong and extend their lead back to double-digits and got it up to 18 with 14:23 left in the game, 51-33. Sophomore Samantha Breidenbach would answer with a lay-up to cut the lead to 16 with 12:30, the closest Adelphi would get for the remainder of the game. Dowling was up by as many as 29 in the second half, which was too much for the Panthers to come back from on their way to the 28-point victory.
For Dowling, Puwalski led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Julia Koppl chipped in with 13 points and five boards. Connie Simmons was also in double figures with 10 points along with seven rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, December 30 when they host Dominican College at 5:30 p.m.
