The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to nearby Molloy College on Saturday, December 18 on the first night of the Adelphi Holiday Classic. The Panthers shot 51 percent in the second half, extending a 10 point halftime lead over 30 points before collecting a 69-48 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 6-3 overall, while Molloy falls to 2-5.
Chris Ranglin led the Panthers with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Richard Harkins also scored 15 points, including four triples, while Tim Sartor added 11 points (3-5 from beyond the arc) and Bradley Simpson added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The first 16 minutes of action were tight, as no one could take more then a five point lead and Molloy led, 10-9 at the half way point of the first period. The Panthers pushed into the lead at the nine minute mark on a Tim Sartor triple, and still clung to a two point edge with four minutes to play, 18-16.
However, Adelphi would close the first half on a 10-2 run, getting five points from Chris Ranglin, including a three-pointer with three seconds on the clock, to enter the intermission with a 10 point bulge, 28-18, Adelphi's largest lead of the first half.
The Lions out scored Adelphi, 7-4 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Panthers responded with a 14-3 spurt to take a control of the game, 46-28 with 14:17 left in the action. Adelphi continued to push their advantage, turning a 18 point bulge into an insurmountable, 31 point cushion, 63-32, thanks to a 17-4 sprint that was capped by a Bradley Simpson lay-up with 6:11 on the clock.
Molloy would continue to battle and closed out the game with six unanswered points, but it was too little too late, as Adelphi claimed a 69-48 win.
The Panthers return to the hardwood on Sunday, December 19 when they close out the Holiday Classic with a 3:00 pm clash with Dowling College.
