The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University this evening in an NE-10 match-up. The Panthers held a 26-16 lead at the half and cruised to a 20-point victory, 67-47. AU improves to 2-3 and 1-3 in the league, while SCSU falls to 3-3 and 1-3.
For the Panthers, senior Ashley Caiafa scored a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Kara Tancredi recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Amanda Campusano chipped in with 13 points.
Both teams traded basket in the early minutes and it wasn't until the 9:03 mark when AU extended to an eight-point lead on a three-pointer from Caiafa. Almost three minutes had gone by with either team hitting a shot until the Owls got a jumper from Sylvonya Moore to cut the lead to six. Campusano would answer back with a three and two free throws to put the Panthers up 22-11 with 4:50 left. AU would extend to their largest lead of the first half, 25-11, after a three from Tancredi. Reilly Poirier would connect on a lay-up with 30 seconds left to cut the Panthers lead to 10 at the half, 26-16.
The Owls came out of halftime aggressive and cut the Panthers' lead in half, less than a minute in. Adelphi would go back up by double digits, 33-22, after another triple from Campusano. After the Owls for the score to 37-29, Adelphi went on a 9-0 run to go up by 17 with six of the points courtesy of Tancredi. From that point on the Panthers never looked back en route to the victory and had their lead up to 24 points at one point.
SCSU shot just 24.2-percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers, while the Panthers shot 44.4-percent and had 16 assists on their 24 shots made.
For the Owls, Reilly Poirier led the way with 10 points and five rebounds, while Milena Lazarevic and Moore each scored seven points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, December 4 when they travel to take on American International College at 1:30 p.m.
