Men's Basketball Stunned by Southern Connecticut State, 68-52

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 contest on Wednesday, December 1 in Garden City. The Panthers shot just 12 percent in the first half, trailing by nine at intermission and never recovered, falling 68-52. The loss drops Adelphi to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10, while Southern Connecticut State improves to 5-1 and 3-1 in conference.

Richard Byrd led the Panthers with 22 points, including 12-15 from the charity stripe, and he added nine rebounds. Chris Ranglin also reached double figures scoring 14, while Norron McDonald pulled down 10 misses and Richard Harkins had five assists and seven rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start as they combined for just 11 points in the first five minutes of play as the Owls led, 7-4. Southern Connecticut State continued to lead, 10-6 with 13:43 to play and used a 10-2 spurt, pushing their advantage to 12, 20-8 with 10:05 on the clock.

Adelphi responded with a 9-3 run over the next six minutes, capped by a McDonald lay-up that cut the Owl edge to six points, 23-17. However, just five points would be scored in the final four minutes of the half, four by Southern Connecticut State, giving the Owls a nine point lead, 27-18 at the half.

A Byrd lay-up two minutes into the second period cut the margin to six again, 29-23, but 20-2 run by Southern Connecticut State put the game out of reach, as the Panthers found themselves down 24, 49-25 with 12:37 remaining in the contest. Adelphi however, turned the pressure up, using a Ranglin jumper to spark a 18-4 burst, that was capped by a Ranglin triple, to pull within 10 points, 53-43 with 7:21 left.

Southern Connecticut State responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to push the bulge back to 17, 62-45 on a Trevon Hamlet lay-up. Adelphi would get no closer then 14 the rest of the way, falling 68-52.

The Panthers return to the court on Saturday, December 4 when they take on the AIC Yellowjackets at 3:30 pm in Springfield, Massachusetts.
