The Adelphi University men's soccer team closed out the regular season on Monday, November 8 against Atlantic Soccer Conference foe Houston Baptist with the regular season conference title on the line. The Huskies struck first, but Adelphi scored the equalizer in the second frame, which is how the game would end, 1-1. With the loss Adelphi closes the regular season out at 9-6-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the ASC, while Houston Baptist is 7-7-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference.
The visiting Huskies opened the scoring in the 14th minute of action as Houston Baptist was awarded a corner kick. Mateo Jimenez sent the ball streaking toward the Panther net and Adelphi keeper, Thorne Holder dived to meet it, but missed the ball. A waiting Walter Kromholz dove and headed the ball into the back of the Panther net for a 1-0 lead.
Adelphi put sent six shots at the Husky goal in the first half and Houston Baptist goalkeeper Chris Dodd turned the four that ended up on goal away to keep the game scoreless entering half time.
The Panthers finally broke through in the second half, as Houston Baptist attempted to clear a dangerous ball from inside their penalty area. The ball moved toward Alex Kouznetsov, who one timed a half volley into the back of the Husky net. Dodd did not even have a chance to react to Kouznetsov's volley, which made the score, 1-1 in the 67th minute of action.
Adelphi kept the pressure up in the second frame, sending 13 shots at the Husky goal, but Dodd was again equal to the task sending six of seven shots on goal away to force overtime. Both Houston Baptist and Adelphi put sent one shot at goal in the overtime periods, but they did not find the mark, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
Dodd made a total of 10 saves in the win and Holder collected two for the Panthers, as Adelphi out shot Houston Baptist 20-10 and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
With the tie Houston Baptist captures their first Atlantic Soccer Conference regular season crown and earns the #1 seed in the ASC tourney, while the Panthers finish second.
Adelphi will return to action on Friday, November 12 when they take on the #3 seed in the semifinals of the ASC Tournament at 7:00 pm in Garden City, New York.
