The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption College on Sunday, November 28 in Garden City. The trailed by four points with three minutes to go, but pulled out a 76-74 victory, thanks to two late free throws from Chris Ranglin. With the win Adelphi improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action, while Assumption falls to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10.
Richard Byrd led Adelphi with a team-high 21 points, including hitting on 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Ranglin chipped in 11 points and five rebounds, while Richard Harkins scored 10 points and grabbed six misses. Tim Sartor just missed reaching double figures, scoring nine points, all in the second half, on 3-3 shooting from deep.
The game went back and forth in the opening minutes and the score remained tied, 8-8, at the 14:48 mark. However, over the next five minutes the Panthers would unleash a 18-8 run that was capped by a Bradley Simpson lay-up, to take a 10 point advantage, 26-16, with 9:37 on the clock. Adelphi would extend the lead to 13, 31-18, on a Simpson three-pointer with 6:51 to go, marking the Panthers largest lead of the game.
Assumption came alive after Simpson's triple, holding Adelphi to just four points the remainder of the first half, while dropping in nine of their own, including a lay-up from Bobby Harris with 1:31 to cut the margin to just six, 35-27, which would be the halftime score.
The Greyhounds opened the second half of action with a 23-6 explosion, that was sparked by a Tim Beinert jumper and capped by a Kel Haynes three-pointer, giving Assumption a 50-41 lead with 13:48 left in the game. A Harris triple with 12:18 on the clock would give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the contest, 53-42.
Adelphi answered the Assumption charge with a quick 10-1 run, that included four Panther free throws sandwiched between Sartor triples to pull Adelphi within one, 54-52 with 9:14 remaining. The Greyhounds would push the lead to six points on several occasions before Adelphi managed to knot the action at 69 with 2:57 to play on a Ranglin jumper.
The Panthers took the lead, 71-69, on an RJ Samuels lay-up, but Beinert answered with a lay-up of his own to tie the action at 71 with 1:08 remaining. Adelphi would re-take the lead, 73-71 on two Bryd free throws with 51 seconds left and both teams would make the front end of a one and one, continuing Adelphi's two point lead, 74-72 with 19 ticks left.
Mike Baldarelli layed the ball in off of a Ryan Rozsnaki assist with 12 ticks left to knot the action one more time at 74, but fouled Ranglin with six ticks left, putting the game in his hands. Ranglin converted both freebies giving Adelphi a two point lead, 76-74 and Assumption one last chance. Cory Schmidt had one last chance for Assumption, driving the lane, but missed short and RJ Samuels came up with the rebounds giving Adelphi the win.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, December 1 when they host Southern Connecticut State at 7:30 pm in a Northeast-10 clash.
