The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Golden Knights of The College of St. Rose this evening in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. St. Rose held AU to shot 36.4-percent from the field on their way to the victory, 65-50. St. Rose improves to 4-1 and 1-1 in the NE-10, while the Panthers fall to 1-2 and 0-2.
For the Golden Knights, junior Ashley Rath led all scorers with a game-high of 20 points as senior teammate Lynsey Timbrouck added 15 points. Sophomore Samantha Briendbach scored a team-high of 13 points and grabbed four rebounds, while freshman Jessica Kitrys picked up nine points for the Panthers.
St. Rose stormed out from the opening tip-off as Timbrouck and Rath accounted for 11 of the teams first 19 points, giving the Golden Knights a 19-4 lead in the games first six minutes. Two jumpers by senior Ashley Caiafa and a lay-up by sophomore Kara Tancredi got the ball rolling for the Panthers' as they trailed by 11, 21-10, with 11:14 showing. Junior Erika Cottle's basket with 5:00 left to play in the opening stanza, snapped a six-minute field goal drought for Adelphi as St. Rose extended their lead back up to 13, 26-13. A few minutes later, junior Amanda Campusano drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit 10, 28-18, however Rath's lay-up with 2:39 on the clock, put St. Rose up by 12 and went into intermission leading, 32-20.
Adelphi came out strong in the second half as they went on a 9-2 spurt to cut St. Rose lead to six, 35-29, with 14:30 to go in regulation. Four different players scored during the run which was capped off by a driving lay-up by freshman Ashley O'Connell. A jumper by junior Adrianna Gaeta put the Golden Knights lead back-up to double-digits with 10:51 on the clock.
Freshman Marielle Duryea's two-pointer with 8:36 got Adelphi within single-digits, 46-37, however, they could not creep closer as the Panthers went into a field goal funk over the next 3:48. Rath's two buckets ignited a St. Rose 11-7 run, as they took a 57-44 lead with 4:44 remaining in regulation.
The Panthers are idle until Sunday, November 28 when they host Assumption College at 1:30 p.m.
