Women's Basketball Suffers 60-47 Setback Against Pace

The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted Pace University in their first conference contest of the season this afternoon. The Setters ended the first half on a 20-0 run en route to the victory, 60-47. Pace improves to 4-0 and 1-0 in the NE-10, while AU falls to 1-1 and 0-1 in the league.

For the Panthers, freshman Sade Jackson led the way with 10 points and added five rebounds, while senior Ashley Caiafa scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Junior Amanda Campusano chipped in with nine points as well.

The Panthers came out aggressive and had the lead through most of the first half. AU jumped out to a 14-7 lead with 11:34 left in the first half after Jackson dished to classmate Jessica Kitrys for a bucket. After two Setters free throws, the Panthers would re-gain their seven-point lead after a Jackson lay-up, with 10:57 remaining. With 7:51 til the half, Caiafa buried a three-pointer to extend AU's lead to 19-9, their last basket of the half.

Pace would then end the first half on a 20-0 run and they would take their first lead of the game, 20-19, with just over three minutes left in the half. A Brittany Huggins jumper with three seconds left would cap off the run and give Pace a 29-19 halftime advantage.

Adelphi would cut the Setters' lead to nine early in the second half after a three-pointer from Campusano. Pace would then go on a 7-0 run highlighted by a Kerri White triple with 17:05 left in regulation. Pace would get up by as many as 18 with just over 10 minutes left in the contest, but AU would receive a three from Campusano and a jumper from Caiafa to get within 13. After Caiafa's jumper, Pace would jump out to their largest advantage of the game, 58-38, with 6:35 remaining to put the Panthers away.

Pace shot 45.8 percent from the field in the win and was 15-21 from the free throw line. Adelphi shot 32.8-percent from the field and just 30.8-percent from the charity stripe.

For the Setters, Huggins scored a game-high 15 points, while Carol Johnson tallied 14 points and pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Maral Javadifar chipped in with 12 points and six boards.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Albany, New York to take on The College of St. Rose at 5:30 p.m.
