Field Hockey Cruises Past Assumption, 5-1

The Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to take on Assumption College this afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The Panthers scored four first half goals en route to the 5-1 victory. The Panthers improve to 11-6 and 6-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds drop to 0-16 and 0-9.

Junior Jeanette Heimerle netted the first Panthers goal in unassisted fashion, 3:29 in, to give AU an early lead. At the 16-minute mark, Heimerle would find classmate Julianne Gerbino with a short pass in front of the net for the score. A little more than six minutes later, Gerbino would tally her second goal of the game with the assist from freshman Jami DeGrote. With 46 second remaining in the first half, senior Natasha Pedzik score an unassisted goal to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead headed into the locker rooms.

Adelphi scored four first half goals on seven shots and one penalty corner, while Assumption had three shots and four penalty corners.

The Greyhounds would get on the board, 10:07 into the second half, when Meagan Dow found Jess MacDonald in front of the cage for the goal. With 21 second remaining in regulation, Heimerle netted her second goal of the contest for AU's fifth goal.

Junior Lucia Vigliotti stopped four shots in the first 57:38 of play, while sophomore Kristine Puzio finished out the final 12:32. Danielle Luongo recorded two saves in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 6 when they travel to take on second-ranked UMass Lowell at 1:00 p.m.
