Box Score
Lowell, Mass. -
The fifth-seeded Adelphi University field hockey team took on first-seeded UMass Lowell this afternoon in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Down 3-0 at the half, the Panthers scored two second half goals but it wasn't enough as Lowell went on to win, 4-2. Lowell improves to 21-0 and advances to the championship, while AU drops to 13-9.
The River Hawks jumped out to an 1-0 lead when Rachel McCarthy beat junior keeper Lucia Vigliotti on a penalty stroke, 2:29 into the first half. Less than three minutes after McCarthy's ninth goal of the season, Sammy Macy brought the ball up the midfield where she found Katie Enarie for her 27th score of the season.
At the 23-minute mark, McCarthy tallied her second score of the contest when she fired a shot through a crowd of Panther defenders to give UML a three-goal lead headed into the half. The River Hawks out shot the Panthers 13-4 in the first half, and held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Panthers got on the board, 12:10 into the second half, when junior Jeanette Heimerle set up sophomore Erin Grekin for the goal on a 2-on-1 opportunity. Macy would answer right back for Lowell, 2:35 after Grekin's score, with an unassisted goal for her 28th of the year. Grekin would add another score for AU to keep them in it with the assist from classmate Cassie Cabral, but it wasn't enough as UML held on for the victory.
Lowell out shot the Panthers 22-8 in the game, and maintained their edge in penalty corners 10-6. Melanie Hopkins recorded two saves in the win, while Vigliotti set aside four shots for AU.
The Panthers will now await for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament which will be announced on Sunday evening, while Lowell advances to the NE-10 Championship game tomorrow.
