The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to nearby Rockville Centre, New York on Friday, November 19 to take on host Molloy College on the first day of the Molloy Classic. The Panthers held the Lions to just 14 points in the first half and out rebounded Molloy, 47-36 to secure a 62-46 victory. With the win Adelphi remains unbeaten at 2-0, while Molloy falls to 0-1.
Adelphi opened the game ice cold, as Molloy jumped out to a 10-0 lead almost eight minutes into the action. David Akinyooye finally got the Panthers on the board with a jumper at the 11:06 mark, sparking a 24-1 run that would last 10 minutes. The Panther run was capped by a RJ Samuels lay-up and put the Panthers ahead, 24-11 with 2:27 on the clock.
A Molloy triple would cut the margin to a manageable 10 points, but two Bradley Simpson free throws with 1:02 on the clock would push the bulge back to 12 points, which is how the game would enter the intermission, 26-14 in favor of Adelphi.
Richard Byrd opened the second half with one of his two baskets on the night, a three-pointer, that gave Adelphi a 15 point edge, 29-14. Molloy would whittle the Panther lead down to seven, 29-22, with 17:47 on the clock, courtesy of a Jimmy Nolan jumper. However, Adelphi would respond by taking a 17 point lead, 41-24, four minutes later on a John Calarco lay-up.
The Lions would battle back again, getting the lead down to single digits, 46-37, with five minutes remaining on a Brian Hutchinson free throw. The Panthers would respond for the final time, ripping off nine unanswered points to take an 18 point lead, 55-37 on a Chris Ranglin lay-up. Molloy would never get closer then 12 the rest of the way, as Adelphi picked up a 16 point win, 62-46.
Akinyooye led the Panthers with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Ranglin also reached double figures with 11 points. Byrd also had a strong game on the boards, grabbing 11 misses, while Richard Harkins led all players with eight assists.
Adelphi returns to action on 4:00 pm, Saturday, November 20 when they take on fellow Northeast-10 conference member, Franklin Pierce in the Molloy Classic Final.
