The fifth-seeded Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals. AU scored the first two goals of the contest to secure the 2-1 playoff victory. The Panthers improve to 13-8 overall, while the Owls end their season at 8-12.
With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, junior Jeanette Heimerle found classmate Julianne Gerbino in front of the goal to give AU a 1-0 lead, which they took into the half.
The Panthers were aggressive in the first half with 11 shots, while SCSU could only get off four. Adelphi also had two penalty corners to the Owls' one.
Just over 21 and a half minutes into the second half, freshman Emilee Rahner found junior Crystal Gray for the eventual game-winner on a penalty corner. At the 59-minute mark, Meghan Lahm set up Laura Dembofsky for the goal, but it wasn't enough as AU held on for the victory to advance.
Adelphi ended the contest with 25 shots, 14 in the second half, while SCSU got off 12. The Owls held the edge in penalty corners over the Panthers 8-7.
Junior Lucia Vigliotti earned the victory with six saves, while Lauren Zarrella set aside 13 shots in the loss.
The Panthers now advance to the conference semifinals where they will take on first-seeded UMass Lowell on Friday, November 19 at noon.
