Nov. 13, 2010

Box Score

Caldwell, N.J. -

The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to Caldwell College this afternoon in their season opener. The Panthers, who were down by one at the half, shot 56-percent from three en route to the victory, 70-65. AU is now 1-0, while Caldwell starts the season 0-1.

Senior Ashley Caiafa led the way for the Panthers with a career-high 29 points and added nine rebounds, while junior Erika Cottle scored 12 points to go along with three assists. Junior Amanda Campusano scored 11 points in her Panther debut.

The Cougars came out aggressive and jumped out to an early 11-4 lead over AU after a lay up from Gillian Felix. A basket from Caiafa, followed by a free throw from sophomore Alexis Williams cut the deficit to 13-10 but Caldwell would extend their lead to 17-10 with 13:27 left in the first half. With 3:18 remaining in the half and AU down 31-24, Caiafa would provide the Panthers would seven points to send them into the locker rooms down just one, 36-35.

The Panthers would take their first lead since the opening minutes after a Caiafa three-pointer, one minute into the second half. Both teams would trade baskets for most of the second half with Adelphi jumping out to a six-point lead with 11:45 left in regulation, the largest lead by either in the second half.

With the score tied at 61-61 with 3:52 remaining, a jumper from freshman Marielle Duryea and a free throw from classmate Sade Jackson would give AU a 64-62 advantage, and they would never trail for the rest of the way to secure the win.

Felix led the way for CC with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Kirsty Leedham netted 14 points and grabbed five misses.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 20 when they host league-rival Pace University at the Center for Recreation and Sport at 1:30 p.m.
