The Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to take on the Warriors of Merrimack College this afternoon in a non-conference contest. AU scored two goals in each half for the 4-2 victory. Adelphi ends the regular season with a 12-8 overall record, while Merrimack ends their season at 8-11.
Merrimack got on the board first in the 20th minute when April Daughtery scored her sixth goal of the season with the assist from Katie Zubkis. A little less than four minutes later, junior Jeanette Heimerle set up classmate Julianne Gerbino to even the score at 1-1. With 2;07 left in the first half, senior Natasha Pedzik would give the AU a one-goal lead, which came from Gerbino.
Both teams had two penalty corners in the first half, while the Panthers out shot the Warriors 9-6.
Gerbino would net her 13th goal of the season, 20:57 into the second half, which was once again assisted by Heimerle. Heimerle would extend AU's lead to 4-1 with an unassisted score in the 63rd minute for her 13th goal of the season. With just under three minutes left in regulation, Kaitlyne Cullinane tallied her first score of the season for the Warriors' second goal of the contest.
Adelphi out shot Merrimack 15-11 and held the edge in penalty corners 6-5. Junior Lucia Vigliotti and sophomore Kristine Puzio each played one half and combined for three saves, while Keri Bergquist set aside five shots.
The Panthers will now enter the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament as the fifth seed and will be on the road in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 16.
