Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's soccer team played host to third seeded NJIT in the semifinals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) tournament on Motamed Field, Friday, November 12. The Panthers struck twice in the first half and then held off the Highlanders to secure a 2-0 victory and advance to the Championship final. With the win Adelphi improves to 10-6-2 overall, while NJIT closes the season out at 4-13-2.

Adelphi opened the scoring just 20 minutes into the action as Brandon Stoneham connected with Alexander Kouznetsov in the NJIT half of the field. Kouznetsov struck a ball that found the back of the net in a hurry, beating John Ricketti and putting Adelphi ahead, 1-0.

In the 37th minute of play Michael Aquino scored his first goal of the season, to put the Panthers ahead by two scores. John Koutsounadis controlled the ball in the NJIT penalty area and sent a great pass through the NJIT defense onto the foot of Aquino, who buried it into the back of the goal.

The action was more back and forth in the second frame, but Adelphi goalkeeper Thorne Holder was tested just once, making the stop. Ricketti made four saves in the second frame to keep NJIT close, but the Highlanders could not get on the board, giving Adelphi a 2-0 win.

Adelphi will return to action on Sunday, November 14 at 1:00 pm, when they will battle top seeded Houston Baptist University for the 2010 ASC Conference Championship on Motamed Field.
