The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted No. 10 American International College this afternoon on Motamed Field on Senior Day. AU took an early 1-0 lead but the Yellow Jackets came back to win in overtime, 2-1. AIC improves to 12-6 and 7-2 in the NE-10, while the Panthers drop to 11-8 and 6-4 in the league.
The Panthers broke the scoreless tie in the 21st-minute when junior Jeanette Heimerle found sophomore Cassie Cabral in front of the net for the score. Both teams combined only got off six shots in the first half (AIC 4, AU 2), while each team had two penalty corners each.
AU and AIC both came out aggressive in the second half with AIC getting off 10 shots to the Panthers' seven. Amanda Mclean would even the score at 1-1 when she scored in a scramble in front of the net in the 51st-minute.
In the overtime period, the Panthers had three opportunities to win the game but AIC keeper Kim Steiner came up with three huge saves to keep the Yellow Jackets in it.
Mclean would provide AIC with the game-winning goal, 4:24 into the period, when she beat junior Lucia Vigliotti in front of the net. Adelphi would out-shoot AIC 3-2 in the overtime frame, and would also hold the advantage in penalty corners 2-1.
Steiner stopped eight shots in the victory, while Vigliotti set aside nine.
The Panthers will wrap up regular season play when they travel to take on Merrimack College on Friday, November 12 in North Andover, Mass. at 4:00 p.m.
