Oct. 9, 2010

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. -

The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Hawks of St. Anselm College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Panthers came out and scored three first half goals en route to the 5-1 victory. Adelphi improves to 5-4 and 1-0 in the league, while the Hawks fall to 1-8 and 1-1.

The Panthers wasted only 6:45 to get on the board when junior Julianne Gerbino found classmate Jeanette Heimerle for the early score. Less than four minutes later, Heimerle set up freshman Jamie Ackerman, giving AU a two-goal lead. The duo of Gerbino and Heimerle would strike one more time before the half as Gerbino would once again feed Heimerle for the score.

The Panthers dominated play in the first half by getting off 14 shots to St. Anselm's five, while holding the advantage in penalty corners as well, 9-3.

A little more than three minutes into the second half, Gerbino assisted Heimerle for the third time on the afternoon. Shortly after Heimerle's third tally of the game, the two reversed roles, as Gerbino found the back of the cage with the assist coming from Heimerle.

The Hawks would get on the board late and prevent the Panther shut out when Elizabeth Sears scored an unassisted goal. The Panthers finished the game with 24 shots (20 on goal), while the Hawks got off nine. Adelphi also held a 13-7 edge in penalty corners.

Junior Lucia Vigliotti stopped four shots in the victory, while Megan Sullivan recorded 14 saves in a busy afternoon in goal.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow as they host the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College on Motamed Field at 1:00 p.m.
