The Adelphi University men's soccer team traveled to Oneonta, New York on Saturday, October 9 to take on former Atlantic Soccer Conference rival Hartwick College. The Panthers Mauricio Mora was the hero for the second time this season, scoring the only goal of the game to lift Adelphi to a 1-0 win. With the victory Adelphi improves to 6-5 overall, while Hartwick falls to 2-8-1.
Hartwick and Adelphi played to a scoreless tie in the a first half that mostly a feeling out period as both teams combined for just seven shots (4-3 in favor of Hartwick). However, the action got intense after the intermission as there were 17 shots in the second frame.
Adelphi managed to net the lone goal of the game when Mora collected the ball in the Hartwick half of the field and let loose a bomb from 30 yards out that beat Lee Fenner to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute. From there it was the Adelphi defense and Kyle Blackmer who clamped down and secured the win for Adelphi.
Blackmer made six saves, collecting his first win and shutout of the season, while Fenner made four stops in the loss. Adelphi out shot Hartwick, 13-11 and took six corner kicks to just three for the hosts.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, October 15 when they travel to Farmville, Virginia for a 7:00 pm meeting with Atlantic Soccer Conference foe Longwood.
