The Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to take on No. 6 ranked C.W. Post this afternoon in a non-conference contest. AU held a 2-0 lead at the half, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers went on to win 3-2 in overtime. C.W. Post improves to 6-3, while the Panthers fall to 4-4.
The Panthers scored their two goals of the first half at the 26 and 29-minute mark. The first score came from sophomore Danielle Demola, with the assist from junior Brittany Kinsley off a penalty corner. Just over three minutes later, junior Julianne Gerbino set up classmate Jeanette Heimerle for the junior's third goal of the season.
The Panthers dominated the first half of play and held big advantages in shots (16-3) and penalty corners (13-1).
The Pioneers didn't get on the board until the 48-minute mark when Carlee Dragon netted her sixth goal of the season off a feed from Mia Paltrineri. With just under three minutes remaining in regulation, Helene Bruckner assisted on a Paltrineri score, tying the score at 2-2 and sending the contest into overtime.
C.W. Post would get off two shots in the overtime period while the Panthers were held without a shot. On the only penalty corner of the overtime period, Paltrineri took a re-directed pass from Kathryn Godshalk and sent it to the back of the cage for the game-winner.
Adelphi out shot the Pioneers 23-18 and held the advantage in penalty corners, 19-5. Devon Trenkle set aside 11 shots in the win, while sophomore Kristine Puzio stopped seven shots.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 9 when they host St. Anselm College in their first conference contest of the season on Motamed Field at 1:00 p.m.
