Women's Soccer Comes Up Short At Franklin Pierce In The NE-10 Quarterfinals, 3-1

The sixth-seeded Adelphi University women's soccer team took on the third-seeded Ravens of Franklin Pierce University this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. AU tied the score at 1-1 but could not hold on as FPU advances to the semifinals with a 3-1 victory. The Panthers end their season with an 8-8-1 overall record.

For the Panthers, senior Emily Dunne scored her sixth goal on the season, senior Kim Volinski a team-high with three shots. Junior Dorothy Connolly recorded four saves for the Panthers. Aya Noguchi, Gikas, and Shona Franklin each scored one goal apiece for the Ravens as goalie Jocelyn Leon recorded two saves.

The scoring began in a hurry as the Ravens’ Aya Noguci scored her third of the season 3:25 into the game to give Franklin Pierce a 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers answered as senior Emily Dunne knotted her sixth goal of the season firing a bullet into the lower left hand corner of the net equalizing the game up a 1-1 in the 27th minute. Senior Brianne McDonnell found Dunne on the left hand corner of the 18-yard box. The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into intermission.

Franklin Pierce started the second half with a strike as Gikas in the 47th minute scored the game-winning goal, giving the Ravens a 2-1 cushion. Margaret Thorolfsdottir blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and Gikas got the rebound and popped it home in back. Franklin Pierce scored their final goal off the foot of Shona Franklin in the 69th minute. Franklin took a pass from teammate Amanda Panaro and shot the ball past junior goalie Dorothy Connolly for a 3-1 Ravens lead.

Franklin Pierce out-shot Adelphi 16-9, 8-3 in the second half. Adelphi will now wait to see if they earn an NCAA Division II At-Large berth which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 8.
