Field Hockey Holds Off Merrimack, 4-1

The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Warriors of Merrimack College this afternoon on Motamed Field. AU scored four unanswered goals en route to the victory, 4-1. The Panthers improve to 10-6 and 5-2 in the NE-10, while Merrimack falls to 6-9 and 3-5.

Merrimack struck first and early, 2:31 into the first period, when Jen Otis scored an unassisted back-hand shot to give Merrimack the early 1-0 lead. Just under 29 minutes later, Adelphi evened the score when junior Julianne Gerbino scored off a rebound and save by Kerri Bergquist.

The Panthers held a big advantage in shots (13-2) and penalty corners (8-1) in the first half.

AU would add to their lead, 1:32 into the second half, when junior Jeanette Heimerle set up classmate Theresa Murphy for the score off of a penalty corner. A little over two minutes after Murphy's tally, senior Natash Pedzik netted an unassisted goal to give Adelphi a two-goal lead.

Junior Crystal Gray would score the Panthers' fourth goal with just over five minutes left in regulation on a penalty stroke. AU out shot Merrimack 24-6 and held the edge in penalty corners with 17 to the Warriors' four.

Junior Lucia Vigliotti recorded three saves in the win, while Bergquist set aside 15 Panther shots.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, November 2 when they travel to take on Assumption College at 4:00 p.m.
