Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Falcons of Bentley University this afternoon on Motamed Field in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Junior Jeanette Heimerle scored the game-winner in the second overtime period to give AU the 2-1 win. Adelphi improves to 9-6 and 4-2, while Bentley falls to 6-10 and 3-5 in the league.
The Panthers struck first, 9:16 into the contest, when junior Theresa Murphy netted her second score of the season with the assist from Heimerle off a penalty corner. Adelphi went into the half with an 8-4 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.
The score remained 1-0 in the second half until the 48-minute mark when Stephanie Sideris beat junior Lucia Vigliotti on a penalty stoke to even the score at 1-1. The Panthers and the Falcons got off a combined 11 shots in the second half but both keepers made big saves to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, each team had four shots each and Bentley held a slight edge in penalty corners (4-3). AU had a great opportunity to end it in the first overtime period but Heimerle's shot hit the post at the end of the period.
Only 28 seconds into the second overtime period, junior Brittany Kinsley took it down the middle of the field and set up Heimerle for the game-winner.
The Panthers held the advantage in shots (19-13) and penalty corners (17-16) over the Falcons. Vigliotti stopped nine shots in the win, while Julia Powell recorded 10 saves.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they host the Warriors of Merrimack College at 2:00 p.m. on Motamed Field.
