Volleyball Edged Out By The Chargers

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Northeast-10 pace setter the University of New Haven on Tuesday, October 26. The Chargers took games one and two, but the Panthers rallied to take game two, before falling in extra points in the fourth and final game. With the loss Adelphi falls to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in the NE-10, while New Haven improves to 18-2 and 11-0 in conference action.

The first two games were all New Haven, as the Chargers posted a combined 27 kills to the Panthers 19, picking up wins of 25-15 and 25-19. However, Adelphi regrouped and sprinted out to a 7-2 lead in game three, before New Haven rallied to knot the game at 14. The Chargers led 20-19, but a Hilary Pavels kills and two New Haven errors put the Panthers up 22-20 on the way to a 25-23 win.

The fourth game was a back and forth affair that saw 17 ties. With the score knotted at 18, The Chargers scored four straight to push out to a 22-18 edge. Adelphi responded by scoring seven of the next nine points, taking a 25-24 lead on another Pavels kill. New Haven answered, tying the game twice more, including at 26, but a Patawe Simms hammer put Adelphi ahead again, 27-26. That was as close as the Panthers would get to victory, as the Chargers ripped off three straight points to end the game, 29-27.

Pavels led Adelphi with 18 kills and 23 digs, while Emily Dorko added eight kills. Bree Popham had a game-high 28 digs, while both Katie Bryson and Alexandra Kahen chipped in 10. Heather Mau led the team with 38 assists.

Adelphi returns to action on Friday, October 29 when they travel to Lowell, Massachusetts for a 7:00 pm meeting the the Riverhawks of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
