The Adelphi University women's soccer team hosted the Hawks of St. Anselm College this afternoon on Senior Day. The Panthers scored two first half goals on their way to the 3-0 victory. AU improves to 8-6-1 and 8-6 in the NE-10, while St. Anselm drops to 5-9-1 and 5-8-1.
The Panthers scored two of their three goals in the first half. Their first goal came in the 22nd minute as Brianne McDonnell found the left hand corner of the net from a give-and-go off the foot of Kim Volinski. The scored remained 1-0 until the 33rd minute when Volinski had the ball and rocketed a one-timer, 25-yards out, and smashed it past goalie Jackie Cooney in the upper-right hand corner of the goal.
The game remained 2-0 until the 48th minute of action, when sophomore Kaitlin Monteith found the right hand corner of the net for the Panthers’ third goal of the contest. Monteith dribbled the ball down the left hand side of the field, into the 18-yard box, and shot opposite corner for Adelphi’s final goal of the afternoon.
Before the game, Adelphi honored its nine seniors as they played their last collegiate game on the campus of Adelphi University.
Senior Angela Matinale recorded three saves in relief of junior Dorothy Connolly in the second half, while Cooney stopped 12 shots in the loss.
Adelphi travels to New Haven, Connecticut where they take on the University of New Haven on Wednesday, September 27th in the regular-season finale as they look for a NE-10 playoff spot which begins on Sunday, Oct. 31st. Kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
