Men's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Loyola, 3-1

Baltimore, MD - The Adelphi University men's soccer team continued it's October travel with a trip to Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday afternoon to take on Loyola University at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The host Greyhounds scored just before the half and then would add two more in the early stages of the second half to secure a 3-1 win. With the win Loyola improves to 4-3-1 with the win and Adelphi drops to an even 5-5.

The teams appeared to be headed for a 0-0 halftime when Gerwyn Jones launched a shot from outside the box that found the right post of the Panthers goal and bounced back to the Phil Bannister, who knocked in the rebound to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead they would carry into halftime.

Loyola stayed hot into the second half, scoring 50 seconds into the frame. Stephen Dooley crossed the ball from the right side of the field into the Adelphi box and found Danny Ankrah, who beat Adelphi goalkeeper Thorne Holder to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.

The Greyhounds scored their final goal on a corner kick in the 61st minute, as a Loyola player managed to send a rebound off the crossbar into the back of the net. John Koutsounadis finally broke through for the Panthers as he scored with two minutes left in the game to make the score 3-1.

Adelphi held the edge in shots, 19-12 and corner kicks, 5-4, while Holder collected two saves in the loss and Kyle Wittman made four in the win for Loyola.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 9 when they travel to Oneonta, New York to take on Hartwick at 7:00 pm.
