Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to Skyhawks of Stonehill College on Saturday, October 16 in a battle for third place in the Northeast-10 standings. The Panthers swept the Skyhawks, 3-0 on the strength of a 12 kill, 18 dig performance from Hilary Pavels. With the win Adelphi is now, 13-7 overall and 7-2 in NE-10 play, while Stonehill falls to 8-10 overall and 6-3 in conference action.

The first set was all Adelphi, as the Panthers turned a, 8-8 tie into a 16-9 lead thanks in part to two Chelsea Overholt service aces that sparked the run. Adelphi capped off the first set with a kill from Pavels, giving the Panthers a 25-15 set one win.

The second frame looked to be a repeat of the first as Adelphi led, 14-9. However, Stonehill rallied and knotted the score at 21 on a Panther attack error. But, Adelphi got kills from Emily Dorko, Patawe Simms and Colleen Raga on three of the final four points to seal a 25-21 set two win.

The third set was a back and forth affair as Adelphi moved out to a 3-0 lead, but Stonehill countered with a 7-1 run to take a 7-4 edge. From there the game was tied at 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 before three straight Pavels kills and a Dorko effort, coupled with back-to-back Stonehill errors gave the Panthers control, 23-17. However, Stonehill had one more effort left, as they ripped off six of the next seven points, pulling to within one, 24-23, on a Laura Noonan kill, but fell short as an attack error ended the action, 25-23.

Pavels led the way with 12 kills and 18 digs, while Dorko had eight kills. Heather Mau had a game-high 28 digs, while Overholt also picked up 13. Katie Bryson led all players with 28 assists on the day.

Adelphi returns to action on Friday, October 22 when they travel to Bridgeport, Connecticut for a 6:00 pm meeting with the Purple Knights.
