The Adelphi University men's soccer team traveled to Farmville, Virginia to take on Longwood University in their Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) opener. Despite a combined 24 shots on goal, the Panthers and Lancers played to a scoreless tie in 110 minutes of action. The tie leaves Adelphi with an overall mark of 6-5-1 and an ASC record of 0-0-1, while Longwood sits at 1-9-3 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
Longwood started the action in the first half with two shots on goal that were pushed wide by Kyle Blackmer, keeping the game scoreless. John Koutsounadis then tested Joel Helmick, who was up to the task, turning Koutsounadis' attempt away. Longwood would challenge Blackmer once more during the first half, while Adelphi's Quintel Gates forced Helmick to make a stop late in the action, but the game entered the half scoreless.
Dan Larenius and Henderson Hewes opened the offense in the second frame, putting pressure on the Lancers, but Helmick made two more stops. Near the end of the half the Lancers put a header on net, but Thorne Holder kept the ball out of the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime, Longwood had the only two chances at goal as they registered seven shots in the extra frames. Fortunately, Holder was equal to the task, securing the tie for the Panthers.
Longwood held an edge in shots, 16-8 and corner kicks 5-1, while Helmick made four saves in the game and Holder and Blackmer had three each.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, October 17 when they take on Howard University in Washington, D.C. in an ASC contest.
