The Adelphi University women's soccer team played host to Assumption on Wednesday, October 13 in a Northeast-10 contest on Motamed Field. The Panthers Emily Dunne opened and closed the scoring to secure a 3-1 conference victory for Adelphi. With the win the Panthers even their overall mark at 5-5-1 and their conference record is currently 5-5, while Assumption falls to 3-9-1 overall and 3-8 in NE-10 action.
Dunne opened the scoring in the 16th minute as the Panthers pressured the Greyhound goal. Dunne took a strike from inside of 10 yards but an Assumption defender turned that effort away. The rebound found the foot of a waiting Dunne, who managed to slide the ball under a diving Lauren Keating and into the back of the Assumption net.
In the 41st minute the Panthers scored again, this time pushing the ball up the left side of the field. Kim Volinski made a run toward the end line and at the last moment sent the ball towards the Greyhound net. A streaking Jessica Baisley managed to just get a foot on the ball and sent it across the line up into the top of the net, giving the Panthers a 2-0 edge at the half.
Assumption got on the board in the second half as Adelphi was whistled for a foul about 30 yards out in the 54th minute of play. Molly Kessler stood over the ball to take the free kick. Kessler struck a shot that curved towards the near post and looked to be going high, but dipped into the back of the Panther goal, over a leaping Dorothy Connolly, pulling the Greyhounds within one tally, 2-1.
Adelphi responded in the 72nd minute as Dunne notched her second goal of the contest. Dunne again took a bullet strike from inside the box and was again turned away by Keating. However, in a repeat of the first Dunne goal, the rebound found its way right back to Dunne who scored her second of the contest and put the game out of reach at 3-1.
Connolly made six stops in the win, while Keating made three in the loss. Adelphi held a 10-8 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, October 16 when they travel to Colchester, Vermont for a 1:00 pm meeting with St. Michael's.
