The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College this afternoon on Motamed Field. With the score even at 0-0 at the half, AU scored two second half goals for the 2-0 victory. The Panthers improve to 6-4 and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while SMC falls to 2-9 and 0-3 in the league.
The Panthers dominated play throughout the first half of play but the Purple Knights' defense kept them in it and the score even at 0-0. AU went into the half with eight shots and five penalty corners, while St. Michael's had two penalty corners and no shots attempted.
Adelphi would break the scoreless tie, 3:36 into the second half, when junior Jeanette Heimerle tapped the ball to sophomore Cassie Cabral in front of the cage for the score. With just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, Heimerle would score her fourth goal in two games with the assist coming from classmate Theresa Murphy.
The Panthers had 19 shots with 17 on goal, while the Purple Knights got off just three. AU also held a big advantage over SMC in penalty corners, 12-3.
Junior Lucia Vigliotti recorded one save for the shut out, while Meghan McLaughlin had a busy day in net, setting aside 15 shots in the loss.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, October 13 when they host Southern Connecticut State University on Motamed Field at 7:00 p.m.
