Adelphi Women Come Up Short At Saint Anslem, 56-55

Manchester, N.H. - Trailing 31-23 at the half, the Adelphi University managed to outscore host Saint Anselm in the second half, but still came up short, dropping their fourth straight, 56-55. The Hawks improve to 6-7 and 3-6 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers fall to 2-11 and 0-9 in the league.

Freshman Kara Tancredi came off the bench to lead Adelphi with 13 points and four rebounds. Junior Ashley Caiafa had 11 points and six rebounds.

The Panthers opened on a 8-4 run capped by an Alexis Williams' three-pointer at 16:38. The Hawks responded with seven unanswered points to take the lead. Adelphi knotted the score at 13 on a Caiafa trifecta at 10:54, but Saint Anselm did not relinquish its lead pulling ahead on a 13-6 run, 26-19, at 4:51. The Hawks maintained a single digit lead for the remainder of the half with the Panthers trailing by eight at intermission.

Saint A's opened its margin to 11 points, 39-28, in the opening minutes of the second half. But then they went cold as a beyond the arc field goal by sophomore Erika Cottle sparked a 9-0 rally to close the gap to two points, 39-37, with 10:05 left in the contest. The Panthers stayed within five points or less for the last nine minutes, eventually coming to within one, 54-53, on Caiafa's third three-pointer of the game with 19 seconds to go. Two foul shots put the Hawks up by three, but Caiafa's last attempt to tie the game was unsuccessful with freshman Samantha Breidenbach's offensive rebound and jumper coming at the buzzer, 56-55.

Adelphi held a slight advantage in all shooting categories but continued to falter on the boards. The Hawks pulled down 37 rebounds compared with 29 for the Panthers.

Megan Howard led a balanced Saint Anselm's squad with 16 points along with seven rebounds. Jennifer Gureckis had 11 points, followed by Courtney May and Erin Higgins with 10 points a piece. May also led all players with 13 rebounds.

The Panthers return to conference action on Tuesday, January 12, as they host UMass-Lowell at 5:30 p.m.
