Men's Basketball Stopped By St. Anselm, 78-69

The Adelphi University men's basketball team snapped its nine-game win streak this afternoon falling to the Hawks of St. Anselm College, 78-69. Richard Byrd led the way for the Panthers scoring 23 points in the loss. Adelphi drops to 14-2 and 7-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while St. Anselm improves to 8-6 and 4-5 in the league.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead which would eventually increase to 11-5. A Pat Luptowski 3-pointer would cut the Panthers' lead to 13-12, but a John Calarco lay up would extend Adelphi's cushion to 15-12. Adelphi held a 22-20 advantage, their last lead of the game, with 7:30 left in the first half after a jumper from Robert Johnson. The Hawks would answer with a Greg Vetrano 3-pointer and free throw to take a 24-22 lead with 6:10 remaining. A Byrd jumper from behind the arc would cut the Hawks advantage to 30-29 with 1:11 till the half until two free throws from Vetrano sent St. Anselm into the locker room with a three-point lead, 32-29.

St. Anslem would open the second half on an 8-2 run highlighted by three 3-pointers. The Hawks would jump out to a 43-31 lead, their largest of the game, but the Panthers would come back and cut the deficit to six with with 11:51 left in regulation, 48-42. The Panthers would get a jumper from David Akinyooye followed by a 3-pointer from Johnson to even the score at 50-50, the closest Adelphi would get. St. Anselm would then go on a 17-10 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach and hold on to the 78-69 victory.

For the Hawks, Vetrano scored a team-high 22 points and handed out five assists, while Thomas Baudinet added 21 points and six rebounds. Luptowski contributed with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Branimir  Zeko collected a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. 

For the Panthers, Byrd led the way with a game-high 23 points and six rebounds, while Johnson tallied a career-high 17 points to go along with four rebounds. 

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, January 12 when they host UMass Lowell at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
