Women's Basketball Falters Against SNHU, 65-53

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 65-53, tonight at the Center for Recreation & Sports. The Penman improve to 9-6 and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 while the Panthers drop to 2-10 and 0-8 in the league.

The Panthers were led by mid-season transfer Gina Giambanco with 19 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Theresa Foley had 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Both teams played even from the field in the first half, with Adelphi holding the advange from beyond the arc and at the free point line. This spurred the Panthers to a 23-14 lead with 8:54 on the clock. Adelphi's lead climbed to 12 points, 29-17, on an Erika Cottle jumper at 3:37, however that would prove to be their last bucket of the half. Ashara Carrington scored six for SNHU in a 9-0 run to close the gap to 29-26 at intermission.

The second half opened with two lead changes and three ties in the first five minutes of play. After tying 35-35 at 15:12, the Penmen took the lead for good on a 5-0 run. SNHU led by as much as 14 points, 60-46, at 3:44, as the Panthers struggled from the field down the stretch.

Adelphi forced 19 SNHU turnovers, but faded on the boards, pulling down 36 rebounds compared with 46 for the visitor. The difference in the second half proved to be the charity stripe as the Penmen went to the line 22 times, connecting on 16, while the Panthers were 0-2.

Carrington was the only Penmen in double figures as she poured in 29 points along with a team-high nine rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, January 9, as they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to face Saint Anslem at 1:30 p.m.
