The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) on Wednesday, January 6. Panther guard Richard Byrd led Adelphi to a 75-59 victory, leading all players with 21 points, converting all 10 of his free throw attempts.
Byrd scored a game-high 21 points and also grabbed eight rebounds, while Casey Cosgrove and Chris Ranglin chipped in 12 points each. Cosgrove added six assists and Ranglin pulled down five misses. David Akinyooye also reached double figures with 11 points.
Adelphi and SNHU played a back and forth first seven minutes as no one could take momre then a one point lead in the early going. However, during a seven minute span Adelphi turned a, 11-10 lead, into a 23-12 bulge, thanks to a 12-2 run that was capped by a Byrd jumper with 6:17 left.
The Penmen would climb back into the game, responding with a 7-0 run to cut the Panther lead to four, 23-19 with 4:22 remaining in the half. Adelphi answered with a Cosgrove triple and a Ranglin three points play to push the lead to 10, 29-19, before heading into halftime with a nine point, 35-26 edge.
The second half was all Adelphi, as the Panthers took the largest lead of the game, 72-51, thanks to four straight Byrd free throws, putting the game out of reach on the way to a 75-59 win. The closest SNHU would get in the final 10 minutes of play was 55-47, thanks to a Josh Morgan-Green made foul shot.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 9, when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for a 3:30 pm meeting with Saint Anselm.
