The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Purple Knights of St. Michael's college this afternoon at home in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Purple Knights ended the game on a 5-0 run to secure the 67-62 victory. St. Michael's improves to 7-11 and 5-10 in the league, while Adelphi drops to 3-17 and 0-15 in the NE-10.
For the Panthers, freshman Kara Tancredi scored a team-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, while junior Ashley Caiafa netted 15 points and dished out three assists. Freshman Alexis Williams was also in double figures with 11 points.
The Purple Knights jumped out to an early 11-3 lead over the first four and a half minutes after two free throws from Coreen Hennessy. The Panthers would chip away and tie the score, 17-17, after a Tancredi 3-pointer. St. Michael's would then go on a 12-4 run highlighted by a triple each from Alexis Keller and Meg O'Shea. A Williams lay-up and jumper would cut the Purple Knights' lead to five, 37-32, with 1:06 left in the first half. Adelphi would head into the locker room down three, 37-34, after a jumper from senior Hunter Marek with 14 ticks left on the clock.
The second half was back and forth with the Panthers grabbing their first lead of the game since the opening minutes, 38-37, after a Tancredi lay-up. The game saw its sixth tie of the contest with 8:58 left, 51-51, after a jumper from St. Michael's Michelle Otey. The Purple Knights held a 57-53 lead with 6:41 remaining, but the Panthers would come back and even the score at 58-58. With 1:39 left in regulation, Adelphi took a 62-60 lead after a bucket from sophomore Erika Cottle, the last basket they would score. St. Michael's ended the game on a 5-0 run to hold on to the 67-62 victory.
For the Purple Knights, Otey scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight misses, while Logan Pintka added 17 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Keller was the final Purple Knight in double figures with 10 points to go along with her five rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 3 when they play host to league-rival Pace University at the Center for Recreation and Sport at 5:30 p.m.
