Men's Basketball Shoots Past Saint Michael's, 68-48

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Saint Michael's College on Saturday, January 30. Adelphi shot a blistering 65 percent from the field in the first half to take a 41-21 lead into halftime on the way to a 68-48 victory. The win snaps Adelphi's six game losing streak and pushes the Panthers to 15-7 overall and 8-7 in NE-10 play, while Saint Michael's falls to 8-11 overall and 4-11 in the conference.

Richard Byrd led four Panthers in double figures with 15 points, while Chris Diasparra chipped in 11 points and five rebounds. Both Rob Johnson and Steffon Farley added 10 points, while Johnson pulled down six misses and Farley had two blocks. Casey Cosgrove also handed out a game-high seven assists in the win.

Adelphi started fast, opening the game with a 7-0 run that included four points from Chris Diasparra and set the tone for the entire half. The Purple Knights closed to within four points, 12-8, on a Sam Cieplicki triple with 13:53 left, but a Norron McDonald lay-up sparked a 15-2 Panther run. The run was capped by a Steffon Farley lay-up and gave Adelphi a 27-10 bulge with 8:26 left in the half.

The Panthers kept the pressure on, taking their first 20 point lead of the game on a Chris Ranglin lay-up with 5:13 remaining, before entering the locker room ahead 21 points, thanks to a John Calarco jumper that made the score 42-21 at the horn.

Things kept rolling for Adelphi in the opening minutes of the second half as a Rob Johnson lay-up 20 seconds into play, opened up a 11-2 run that gave the Panthers a 30 point lead, 53-23, which came courtesy of a Diasparra jumper at the 13:33 mark. Saint Michael's continued to fight, getting within 23 points twice, before the Panthers took their largest lead of the game, 67-35, with 4:31 to play, effectively putting the contest out of reach on the way to a 68-48 win.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 3 when they play host to Pace University at 7:30 pm.
