The women's basketball team hosted the Skyhawks of Stoneill College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Stonehill's 42-19 halftime lead proved to be too much for the Panthers as they held on for the victory, 69-43. Stonehill improves to 16-4 and 11-2 in the league, while Adelphi falls to 3-15 and 0-13 in the NE-10.
For the Panthers, freshman Kara Tancredi scored a team-high nine points to go along with three rebounds, while junior Ashley Caiafa also scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds. Sophomore Theresa Foley added seven points and hauled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Stonehill jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two buckets from Erin Gray and never looked back, as they never trailed throughout the afternoon. Adelphi would cut the lead to 9-6, the closest they would get in the contest, after a Caiafa jumper. The Skyhawks would extend their lead to double digits with 9:23 left in the half, 22-11, after a Kelsey Simonds lay-up. With Stonehill up, 29-12, a Tancredi three-point play would cut the deficit to 14, but the Skyhawks would end the half on a 13-4 run to take a 42-19 lead into the half. Stonehill held the advantage on the glass 21-16 and also held the Panthers to shoot 28-percent from the field, while they shot 59-percent.
Over the first four minutes of the second half the Skyhawks extended their lead to 27, 50-23, highlighted by a Gray 3-pointer. Stonehill would take their largest lead of the game, 64-29, after a free throw from Laura Discenza. Adelphi ended the game on a 5-0 run but it was not nearly enough as Stonehill cruised to the victory, 69-43.
For the Skyhawks, Simonds led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assits, while Gray netted 13 points and grabbed six misses. Emily Rousseau contributed with 12 points and three helpers in the win.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, January 26 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire to take on #1 Franklin Pierce University at 5:30 p.m.
