The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 rival Stonehill College on Saturday, January 23. Adelphi trailed by three with eight seconds left, but a Casey Cosgrove off balance three-pointer sent the game into overtime, where Stonehill eventually came out on top, 60-59. With the loss Adelphi falls to 14-6 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while Stonehill improves to 15-3 overall and 12-1 in the NE-10.
Both Steffon Farley and David Akinyooye scored 10 points for the Panthers, as Casey Cosgrove chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. Rob Johnson grabbed 12 misses and contributed six points.
Adelphi opened the game strong, limiting the Skyhawk's chances and taking advantage of their own, while building a 16-8 lead ten minutes in. Stonehill battled back, pulling to within three points with 5:35 to play, 20-17, but Adelphi closed the half with a 6-2 spurt, that included jumpers from Richard Byrd, Richard Harkins and David Akinyooye to take a seven point, 26-19 edge into the locker room.
Stonehill chipped the lead to three points on four occassions, but the Panthers bounced back each time and still led by seven, 44-37, with 7:47 to play thanks to a Casey Cosgrove jumper. The Skyhawk's Daniel Heppert answered with a jumper, that sparked a 8-0, giving Stonehill their first lead of the game at 45-44 with 4:44 to play.
Adelphi and Stonehill traded buckets until, the Panthers seemed to take control at 52-49 on a Cosgrove lay-up with 2:45 to play. However, Stonehill converted two free throws and got a lay-up from Mike Kernan to take a one point lead and pushed that to three points, making two of their next four free throw attempts.
After the last make Cosgrove collected the ball and dashed up the right sideline as two Stonehill players converged. He put up an off balance three-pointer that found the mark with two seconds on the clock and a Stonehill desperation heave missed at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Stonehill struck first, but Adelphi answered back with four straight to take a two point lead, 59-57, with 3:22 on the clock. The Panthers would not score again in the extra period and the Skyhawks would make just enough free throws down the stretch (three of four) to secure the 60-59 win.
Adelphi returns to action on returns to action on January 26 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire for a 7:30 pm match-up with Franklin Pierce.
