Box Score

Waltham, MA - The Adelphi men's basketball team traveled to Waltham, Massachusetts on Wednesday, January 19 to take on Northeast-10 rival Bentley College. The Panthers closed to within two points, with four seconds left, but could not get any closer, falling 71-67. Adelphi falls to 14-5 overall and 7-5 in conference play with the loss, while Bentley improves to 15-2 overall and 10-2 in NE-10 action.

Senior guard Cosgrove paced Adelphi with 19 points, 15 of his markers coming via five triples. Junior guard Richard Byrd followed with 14 points, and senior center Steffon Farley added 13 points and eight rebounds.

A back-and-forth battle much of the previous 20 minutes, Bentley took the lead for good with an 8-0 spurt midway through the second half reversing a four-point deficit. A 16-footer by Dowling made it 62-54 with 3:26 left, and a Westrol trey put Bentley up nine with 2:45 remaining.

Adelphi didn't go away easy. Cosgrove hit two free throws with 2:09 on the clock, senior guard Chris Diasparra hit a lay-up with 1:36, and Diasparra made it a 7-0 run when he converted a three-point play with 24.2 seconds remaining.

With the lead down to two at 67-65, Dowling sank two free throws with 21 seconds left, making it a two-possession game. An open lay-up by Adelphi junior David Akinyooye with 4.5 ticks on the clock again made it a two-point spread. Following a timeout, Dowling was again fouled. He once again drilled them both, completing a perfect 11-of-11 effort from the stripe, and locked up the victory.

Adelphi claimed the early lead with a 7-2 spurt to open the game, and Bentley answered with a 15-2 run to take a 17-10 advantage. After the Panthers responded by scoring 11 of the next 12 points, the two teams were never separated by more than four points until two Bentley free throws with 7:27 left.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 23 when they host Stonehill College at 3:30 pm.
