The Adelphi University women's basketball was edged by LeMonye College, 62-59, this afternoon at the Center for Recreation & Sports. The Dolphins improve to 5-7 and 2-5 in the Northeast-10, while Panthers fall to 2-8 and 0-7 in the conference.
Junior Ashley Caiafa and sophomore Erika Cottle each had 16 points and three rebounds, while sophomore Theresa Foley added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Panthers opened on a 10-4 run capped by a basket plus the foul shot by Caiafa at 14:27. The Dolphins rallied back, making it a one-point game, 14-13, on a three-pointer by Muffy Sadler at 10:01. Despite three ties, Adelphi maitained its single-digit lead for the remainder of the first half until Morgan Rowlan connected on a three-point basket as the buzzer sounded. The Panthers trailed, 29-27, at the break.
Adelphi regained its lead on a Alexis Williams jumper, 31-29, at 18:52. The Panthers stayed on top, opening up a seven-point margin, 46-39, on a Foley layup with 9:44 left to go. LeMoyne responded on a 9-0 run to move ahead, 48-46, at 7:06. But the Panthers kept it close, jumping in front on a Cottle trifecta, 52-50, with 3:44 left in regulation. Two lead changes later, the Dolphins pulled ahead for good on Sadler's third three-pointer of the game, 57-56, at 1:44.
Both teams shot around 36 percent in the game, with Adelphi fairing much better from the free throw line (70.6% vs. 55.6%). However the main difference was on defense, as the Dolphins grabbed 57 rebounds compared with just 28 for the Panthers.
Sadler led LeMoyne with 12 points, followed by Katie Hart with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Brandy Wangelin pulled down a game-high 15 boards along with eight points.
Adelphi returns to action on Monday, January 4, as they travel to Philadelphi University for a non-conference match up beginning at 5:00 p.m.
