Despite 19 points from senior guard Casey Cosgrove the Adelphi University men's basketball team dropped a, 82-74 decision to Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts on Saturday, January 16. With the loss Adelphi falls to 14-4 overall and 7-4 in Northeast-10 action, while Merrimack improves to 11-3 and 9-2 in conference play.
Cosgrove led all Panthers with 19 points, while David Akinyooye added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Richard Byrd also reached double digits, scoring 11 points, while Chris Diasparra chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
Merrimack jumped out to a 13-4 lead 3:38 into the contest and used 6-of-10 shooting from long range to gain a 38-28 halftime cushion. However, the Panthers cut the lead to as few as four with 8:49 on a Casey Cosgrove three-pointer, but the host Warriors were able to expand the lead before the half.
The Warriors also out-rebounded Adelphi, 18-12, in the first half, and would win the battle of the boards, 37-33, however the Panthers out rebounded Merrimack, 21-19 in the second half of action.
Adelphi stormed out of the locker room, shrinking the halftime deficit of 10 to just two in 2:30, as the Panthers ran off a 10-2 run behind three of Cosgrove's team-high 19 points. The Warriors responded with seven quick points to push the lead back to nine.
The Panthers cut the margin down to one point on a David Akinyooye jumper with 5:34 left, 60-59, but the Warriors pulled away again and Adelphi could get no closer then four down the stretch.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, January 20 when they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts for a 7:30 pm meeting with Bentley.
