Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 rival Umass-Lowell on Tuesday, January 12. The Panthers held the Riverhawks to just seven field goals in the second half, but could not overcome a 28-24 halftime deficit, falling 54-51. With the loss Adelphi falls to 14-3 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while UML improves to 11-3 overall and 8-3 in NE-10 action.

Richard Byrd led the Panthers with 17 points, while teammate David Akinyooye added 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Casey Cosgrove also reached double figures for Adelphi with 11 points, five assits and four rebounds.

Adelphi controlled the early play, moving out to an 11-7 lead with just over five minutes into the action thanks to an Akinyooye jumper. UML responded with a jumper of their own, but Akinyooye pushed the Panthers back in front by four, 13-9, with two made free throws.

Byrd gave Adelphi another four point lead in the early going, as a lay-up with 11:11 on the clock made the score 15-11, but the Riverhawks went on a 11-0 run, that was capped by a Kyle Caiola lay=up, taking a 22-15 lead with 5:02 to play. UML still lead by seven, 28-21, with 1:14 on the clock, but a Cosgrove triple with 58 seconds left pulled the Panthers to within four, 28-24, at the half.

The second half was just as close, with Adelphi opening the action with a 13-4 run, that included two Cosgrove three-pointers, to take a 37-34 lead with 15:20 to play. However, the Riverhawks answered back again, going on a 8-0 run over the next five minutes to take a five point, 42-37 lead.

Adelphi would cut the UML lead to one point on two occasions and two other occasions but could not get any closer, falling, 54-51. The Panthers even had two chances in the final 10 seconds of play as both Byrd and Chris Diasparra missed triples that would have sent the game into overtime.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 16 when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts for a 3:30 pm meeting with Merrimack.
