Sept. 5, 2009

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's soccer team played host to local rival Fordham on Saturday, September 5. The Panthers held the Rams scoreless for 82 minutes of action, netting two goals of their own to collect a 2-1 win. With the victory Adelphi remains unbeaten at 1-0-1, while Fordham continues to search for a win at 0-2.

The first half of action saw opportunities for both teams with Fordham getting the best chance of the period. A Ram forward secured a misplayed Adelphi ball near the Panther 18 and turned to goal, but Adelphi's Thorne Holder was already on top of him, sliding to make the stop and keep the action scoreless.

The Panthers came alive in the second half of action as their fitness showed through. In the 52nd minute of action John Koutsounadis collected a cross from the left side of the field and pushed it back toward the 18 to a waiting Michael Aquino. Aquino wasted no time, stepping into the feed and slotting the ball into the lower left side of the net.

Just 15 minutes later Kevin Gluchowski worked the opposite side of the field, sending a beautiful cross up and over the Fordham defense to the far side of the goal and a waiting Kris Nosworthy. Nosworthy out jumped a Ram defender and beat Ryan Meara to give Adelphi a 2-0 edge.

Fordham made things interesting in the 83 minute as Tim Richardson crossed the ball into the Panther box and Peter Graham volleyed the ball into the back of the Adelphi goal, past Holder. Graham's goal was the first scored on Adelphi in over 190 minutes of action.

Fordham carried a 13-10 edge in shots, while Adelphi took one more corner kick then the Rams, 3-2. Holder collected four saves in the win and was matched by Meara, who also had four stops.

Adelphi returns to action on September 11 when they open up the Brown Invitational against Yale at 5:00 pm.
