Field Hockey Suffers 2-1 Loss At Home Versus Fifth-Ranked Bentley

The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted Northeast-10 Conference opponent Bentley University in its season-opener this afternoon. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead into the half, only to surrender two goals in the second half and fall to the Falcons, 2-1. Adelphi drops to 1-2 on the season while Bentley evens their record at 2-2.

The Panthers lone goal of the game came early in the first half, 8:33 in, when sophomore Julianne Gerbino netted her fifth goal of the season. Bentley had a share of opportunities in the first half, outshooting Adelphi 7-3 and holding an 8-4 advantage on penalty corners.

The Falcons wasted a little over six minutes to tie the score at one, when Stephanie Sideris beat sophomore Lucia Vigliotti on a penalty stroke. With 7:04 remaining in regulation, Nicole Dion scored an unassisted goal off of her own rebound which proved to be the game-winner.

Bentley outshot Adelphi 8-4 in the second half and 15-7 for the game, while the Panthers held the edge in penalty corners, 5-4 in the second half.

For the Panthers, Vigliotti had a tremendous day in net, recording 10 saves. Alyssa Sliney set aside three shots in the win for the Falcons.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, as they host league-rival Saint Anselm College at 1:00 pm on Competition Field.
