Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Merrimack, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The #10 Adelphi University women's soccer team fell to Merrimack College, 2-1, this afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers drop to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Warriors improve to 7-2-1 and 4-2 in the NE-10.

The Warriors controlled much of the action in the first half, evident by an early goal just 2:18 into the game. Kara Hennigan found the back of the net on a pass from Ashley Alnick to put Merrimack ahead, 1-0. Later in the first half, Jessie DeGraan tallied the ultimate game-winner on a cross from Marissa Gambale at 37:16 to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion at the half.

The Panthers picked up the pace in the second half, improving from just three shots in the first half to nine. It paid off late in the contest, as senior Caitlin Morrison scored on an assist from junior Kim Volinski at 88:58. However, it was too little too late as the Warriors held on for the win.

Sophomore Dorothy Connolly had two saves in the contest, while Brittany Gustafson made three stops for Merrimack.

The Panthers are back in action this Wednesday, September 30, as they host NYIT at 6:00 p.m.
