Field Hockey Battles C.W. Post to a 1-0 Win

Sept. 23, 2009

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Panthers played host to cross-town rivals C.W. Post this Wednesday evening in a non-conference match-up. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Theresa Murphy came up big for Adelphi by scoring what would be the game winning goal. With the win, the Panthers advance to 5-3, 0-0 NE-10 while the Pioneers drop to 3-5 on the year.

Each team came out fired up at the start of the game and held that intensity until the final moments. The defense of both squads held strong virtually the entire game, especially in the first half as neither team would get the ball past the opposing goalies. The Pioneers had advantages in shots and corner kicks, six to three and five to one respectively, but could not capitalize.

In the second half, just over five minutes in, Murphy received a pass from teammate Jeanette Heimerle and took a shot that went past Pioneer goalie, Cortney Colern, to put her team up 1-0, which proved to be the only goal of the game. Again, C.W. Post had the upperhand in shots on goal (five to four) and corners (four to one), but the Panther defense held strong. Goalie Lucia Vigliotti recorded the shutout on the night.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for their first conference match-up against St. Anselm at 4pm.
